If its your first holiday to Menorca, Son Bou, the popular tourist resort will provide you with a range of home comforts away from home. But with all the excitement of planning a summer holiday many people forget to do the most obvious of tasks. So run through this list before you go and check theres nothing that youve forgotten.
Vaccinations
Before you head off to Menorca, check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website to make sure that youre up to date with all the vaccinations you need for your holiday. The list of required vaccinations can change at short notice and as most injections need to be taken at least two months before the date of travel.
Apply For an EHIC Card (Formerly the E111 Card)
If you fall ill whilst in Menorca, Son Bou has a well-stocked pharmacy but if your ailments are slightly more serious and you find yourself needing to seek hospital treatment, an EHIC card will come in handy. The Balearics have a reciprocal health agreement with the United Kingdom and hospitals will provide free or reduced-cost necessary treatment on production of an EHIC card obtained in your country of origin.
Travel Insurance
Before you jet off to Menorca check that you have an up-to-date travel insurance policy for every member of your family. Even your children will need to be covered, either on your policy or through a separate child policy. Missed baggage, flight delays and hospitalisation are all covered by travel insurance and forgetting to take out insurance prior to your holiday could leave you with a hefty bill in an emergency situation.
Turn your clocks forward
With only an hours difference between the UK and Menorca, Son Bou wont leave you jetlagged. However, to avoid missing your excursion pick-ups and get your children into a holiday routine youll need to put your wristwatch forward one hour on landing.
Change Your Pounds to Euro
Like most of Europe, Menorcas currency is the Euro so make sure you convert your Great British Pounds before you arrive on the island. Menorcas Son Bou has plenty of amazing bars and restaurants and the last thing you want is not to have the Euros to spend in them!
Can I Use My Credit Cards?
Youll need to phone your bank or Credit Card company and inform them that youre going away so they dont block your card for unusual spending. However, once you reach Menorca, Son Bou widely accepts American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa cards. ATMs or hole-in-the-wall cash machines are also widely available at the resort.
Travellers Cheques
If youd rather bring travellers cheques to Menorca, Son Bou has plenty of places that will willingly change these for you. Hotels, airports, travel agencies and banks will all change travellers cheques. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take travellers cheques in Euros or Pound Sterling.
Dont Forget the Sun-Screen
If youre travelling to Son Bou, its likely that youll want to make the most out of Menorcas longest beach and if you plan on spending lazy days on holiday just watching your children build sandcastles, youll need to make sure that the whole family is covered up. This means sun-hats, sunglasses and a slathering of sunscreen for everyone. Youll need a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or above and one thats slightly higher for the children.
